Tanzania is the most populated country in Eastern Africa with the lowest population density. 62 million people live there (CIA World Factbook, 2021).

There are concerns about food levels being able to keep up with the rapid population growth, which is estimated to double by 2020.

Tanzania has made significant economic and social progress in the last two decades. However, inequality has increased, with the poorest and most marginalised gaining little from the growth (WFP, 2021).

There is estimated to be a 3 million unit housing deficit in the country, the majority have significantly low household incomes. 90 percent of the population can afford less than $45 on housing per month (Habitat for Humanity).

Between 2013 and 2020 there were 34 natural disasters such as flooding, cyclones and storms which forced people to leave their homes (Statista, 2020). There are currently more than 50,000 people who are internally displaced in the country as a result of natural disasters (Internal Displacement, 2020).

The country struggles with mass infection. Malaria is a leading killer of children under 5, while HIV is the main cause of adult deaths (CIA World Factbook, 2021).
