As children, we all dream of adventures and the uncharted places waiting to be discovered. For Jane Hato, a dedicated player on the Kenya Women’s Football team, these dreams have captured the spirit of the Homeless World Cup. Growing up in Kenya, navigating life’s complexities has not always been easy, but amid the struggles, football has emerged as a sanctuary of peace.
In Jane's words, “Everything in life is competition, except football; football is a place to be free.” This perspective reflects not only her resilience but also her unwavering positivity. On the field, she finds solace in the beautiful game. Jane firmly emphasises her belief that “everything is attitude,” and she is determined to “give love to the world,” channeling her infectious positivity both on and off the pitch.
At the Homeless World Cup, Jane expressed a profound sense of gratitude, stating, “It is a blessing just to breathe.” The joy of participating in this tournament is “something of a dream” for her, and she wishes she could “stop the clock” to live in this moment forever. For Jane, it’s a dream come true to represent her country while exploring the world through football.
The coaches and Vijana Amani Pamoja, which means "Youth, Peace Together," take immense pride in the progress their players have made. Starting from modest local tournaments, the team has now advanced to the international stage, showcasing their remarkable talent and determination. This journey not only underscores their dedication but also illustrates the transformative power of community support in changing lives through sport.
In Kenya, football serves a dual purpose: it’s a platform for competition and a vital tool for creating awareness and educating on gender-based violence. By promoting women's participation in sports, the team empowers young girls to stand against violence and advocates for their rights, fostering a culture of respect and equality.
Looking ahead, Jane has secured a scholarship to study Sports Management in the United States, bringing her one step closer to achieving the dreams that once seemed impossible. Her infectious energy and optimistic spirit have garnered admiration from many at this year’s Homeless World Cup, where players gather around the pitch to support the Kenyan team.
Jane Hato’s journey transcends the boundaries of football; it embodies resilience, hope, and the relentless pursuit of dreams. She is a testament to the transformative power of sport, inspiring countless others to chase their own adventures. Through her journey, Jane reminds us that dreams are not merely to be envisioned; rather, they are to be chased with love.
