Welsh band Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard release Homeless World Cup Cardiff 2019 official song
Anthemic ‘Daffodil Hill’ set to be the soundtrack of the summer as the Welsh capital prepares to host a festival of football like no other
Welsh four-piece Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard have officially launched the Homeless World Cup Cardiff 2019 song, ‘Daffodil Hill’.
The 17th edition of the Homeless World Cup will take place in Cardiff’s iconic Bute Park, right at the heart of the Welsh capital, from Saturday July 27th – Saturday August 3rd 2019. Close to 500 players from nearly 50 countries will travel to Wales to play in the week-long festival of football created to harness the power of sport in transforming the lives of people experiencing homelessness and social exclusion.
Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, the rock band from south Wales, are garnering a reputation as a thrilling new live band following a string of wild gigs since their formation in 2016.
Comparisons to Thin Lizzy and T.Rex by the Guardian, who also included them in their list of 2019 artists to watch out for, meant that they caught the eye of Welsh actor and activist, Michael Sheen, who is responsible for bringing the Homeless World Cup to Wales.
He liked what he saw so much that he asked the band to write and perform the official Homeless World Cup Cardiff 2019 song. A challenge that the band eagerly executed.
Guitarist and frontman Tom Rees said: “Being asked to be involved in the Homeless World Cup was a tremendous honour, as well as a real opportunity to contribute to what the tournament stands for in helping people affected by homelessness.
“The invitation to be involved has a particular significance, especially with Cardiff facing the crisis that it currently is with homelessness. I’m delighted to be a part of an effort to inspire solutions, positivity and support to those who need it most.
“With this in mind we wanted to create a song that encapsulated those feelings of positivity, while also conveying a sense of Welsh nationality. So, through channeling a bit of divine power from personal heroes Wizzard, along with some guidance from our famed national flower, we arrive at Daffodil Hill.
“It’s a proper bop.”
‘Daffodil Hill’ got its live premiere on the BBC Radio 6 Music Cerys Matthews show in late May. The song was played for the very first time during an appearance by Michael Sheen, during which he discussed his role in the tournament and explained to Cerys and listeners what visitors to the Homeless World Cup can expect to see, learn and enjoy.
Speaking about the song, Michael Sheen said: “I always knew that I wanted an official tournament song for this year’s Homeless World Cup. Wales is the land of song after all, and we wanted to ensure that our voices would be heard loud and proud, belting out across the nation throughout the duration of the tournament.
“I asked Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard to create a singalong party anthem. We wanted a song that was full of positivity and optimism, in the same vein as Slade, T. Rex and Wizzard, to reflect the real joyfulness that is found at a Homeless World Cup tournament. And the boys certainly delivered with Daffodil Hill.”
