SUNDERLAND AFC CLIMB TO THE TOP OF THE world united 5k LEAGUE
Through the generosity of their fans, Sunderland have climbed to the top of the World United 5k league, overtaking Brazilian giants Corinthians in the process. The World United 5k is a new global run from the Homeless World Cup,
Football fans all across the world are challenged to sign up for free, choose to run for their favourite team and run 1k, 3k 5k anywhere in the world on the 27 and 28 of April 2024.
A league places the football teams with the most runners signed up in a global top 20. Sunderland currently sit top of the league, with Brazilian clubs Corinthians and Flamengo second and third, Ajax of Amsterdam and West Ham United currently complete the top five. Sunderland’s fierce rivals, Newcastle United, currently sit in seventh.
Mel Young, Co-Founder and President of the Homeless World Cup, said:
“It’s great to see a club like Sunderland, famous for their vociferous fanbase, at the top of our league. With more and more football fans registering each day, we’re seeing clubs quickly shooting up the table. It’s important fans sign up now to give their beloved clubs the best chance of sitting at the top of your league. By signing up to run in the World United 5k, you’re raising awareness of the issues facing those experiencing homelessness. You’re also showing others how they can play their part by supporting the Homeless World Cup, where since 2003 our work around the globe has helped change the lives of 1.2m people through the power of coming together over a game of football.”
Runners can register to run 5k, 3k or 1k by heading to https://worldunited.com/, electing the club they support or running for the Homeless World Cup. The run can take place on 27 or 28 April at any place, inside or outside, anywhere in the world. It’s free to register for the World United 5k and runners can purchase ‘Champion for Change’ medal or World United 5k running bib with 100% of fees going to supporting the Homeless World Cup Foundation.
