Sacramento 2023 Homeless World Cup rankings released


  • Mexico seeded top in both the Men’s and Women’s Sacramento 2023 Homeless World Cup

  • Host’s USA are seeded 18th in the Men’s competition and 6th in the Women’s competition

  • Draw for the tournament will take place on Friday 7th July (PM) at California State University

The Homeless World Cup Foundation released the rankings today for the 18th Edition of the Homeless World Cup being held in Sacramento, California.

There is a genuine feeling on campus of excitement and anticipation ahead of the tournament returning, the first time it is being held in the US. Teams started arriving at Sac State yesterday with more arriving from across the globe today.

Mexico, who are the current holders of the Homeless World Cup in both the Men’s and Women’s competition will be top seeds, whilst Chile, Portugal and Brazil make up the rest of Pot 1 in the Men’s rankings.

Like the Men’s, it is rivals from South America and Europe in the Women’s top four along with Mexico, with Chile, Romania and Norway hoping to challenge for the honours on Finals Day (Saturday 15th July).

The Homeless World Cup is a tournament like no other, all participating countries get to play the same amount of games and all teams will have a prize to compete for on Finals Day.

This year, there is a special award named after Sac State’s retiring President, Robert Nelsen. The Nelsen Way Award is up for grabs for those teams who are in the second tier of the Men’s and Women’s competition on Finals Day, the Lassen Peak Award is on offer to the winners in the next tier in both the Men’s and Women’s competitions and there is also the Shasta Award, the final award in the Men’s competition.

A local reserve team from Sacramento are the last ranked team in the Men’s competition, 8 players will represent Union Gospel Mission (UGM), the charity provide food, clothing and shelter to those in need in Sacramento..
