Michael Sheen shares favourite goal ahead of the Homeless World Cup
A goal. We all have a favourite. Remember exactly where we were when it hit the net, who we were with, how we felt.
At the Homeless World Cup, a goal can change a person’s life forever.
The 17th edition of the Homeless World Cup will take place in Cardiff’s iconic Bute Park in 10 days time, from Saturday July 27th to Saturday August 3rd 2019.
Actor and activist Michael Sheen, who brought the Homeless World Cup to Cardiff, has shared his favourite goal. There have been some worldies from Welsh players he could have chosen. Remember the Ryan Giggs stunner which started from his own half against Arsenal? Hal Robson-Kanu’s Cruyff-turn against three Belgium defenders in the Euros 2016? Or Gareth Bale’s Champions League mid-air bicycle kick winner for Real Madrid?
The actor, who played Brian Clough in The Damned United, doesn’t choose any of those. His choice is a goal you won’t have heard of. Scored by a woman called Dee who played for Wales in the 2017 Homeless World Cup in Oslo. From the moment the ball hit the back of the net, her life changed forever.
So, what’s your favourite goal?
More than 500 players representing from nearly 50 countries will travel to Cardiff to play in the week-long festival of football. Created to harness the power of sport in transforming the lives of people experiencing homelessness and social exclusion, over one million people worldwide have had their lives positively impacted by the tournament and its programmes since the first tournament in Graz, Austria in 2003.
A host of big names from the music and entertainment worlds will make up the Homeless World Cup’s music and debate line up. Manic Street Preachers front man James Dean Bradfield, Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon, Gwenno, The Joy Formidable and former Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci Euros Childs are among the acts playing live on a stage coordinated by PYST.
Deborah Frances-White’s smash hit podcast The Guilty Feminist and highly acclaimed comedian, writer and actor Sara Pascoe are just two of the names that will take to the stage in the Bevan Tent – a space for high profile speakers and the public to engage in discussion and debate about inequality and injustice, hosted in collaboration with the independent think tank The Bevan Foundation.
