Teams from eight Homeless World Cup Member Countries will travel to Kenyan capital, Nairobi, to compete over two days for the second ever Africa Women’s Cup (28-29th June).

Homeless World Cup Member Countries from Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe will be in the capital to take part in the second edition of the tournament.

The Africa Women’s Cup is part of a two-year collaborative project between the Homeless World Cup Foundation, the FIFA Foundation and four national delivery partners which all represent Homeless World Cup Member Countries: Vijana Amani Pamoja (Kenya), Future Stars Academy (Tanzania), Bauleni United Sports Academy (Zambia) and Young Achievement Sports for Development (Zimbabwe).

The project ‘Football to Protect Vulnerable Women from Exploitation’ started in December 2023 and will run until December 2025. Together with the four delivery partners, the collaboration has developed a new curriculum to educate both men and women, as well as young girls and boys, on gender-based violence and gender equality.

Kenya is the Regional Hub for the project and a fitting place to hold the second Africa Women’s Cup.

Nancy Wawaru, Project Regional Hub Manager and Head of Programmes at Vijana Amani Pamoja said:

“We are excited and honored to host the second Africa Women’s Cup here in Nairobi. As the Regional Hub, Kenya is proud to welcome teams from across the continent and create space for critical conversations around gender-based violence. The tournament is more than a sports event; it is a symbol of resilience, power, sisterhood, and strength for African women."

Zoe Hopkins, Homeless World Cup Foundation’s International Network Manager, said:

“The Africa Women’s Cup tournament is a real highlight for participants taking part in this crucial and important initiative. The tournament gives our Homeless World Cup Member Countries and their players the unique opportunity to represent their country at an international tournament. For many of the players, it is their first chance to travel outside their country and experience a new culture.

“In Tanzania last year, we had a fantastic two days of football, fun and friendship. We can’t wait to be in Kenya this summer and to bring 8 teams together in June to do it all over again. We are delighted to see the reigning Champions Uganda return to defend their crown and three new Member Countries coming to Kenya to compete for the Africa Women’s Cup.”

The ‘Football to Protect Vulnerable Women from Exploitation’ programme uses football as a key engagement tool, which helps to break down barriers and reduce stigma when tackling such a sensitive subject. The curriculum has been introduced in all four delivery partner countries with hundreds of people already benefitting from the newly established programme.
