Team Denmark were presented with the second FIFPro Award of the Homeless World Cup here in the iconic Zocalo Square in Mexico City.
Tournament organisers nominated Team Denmark for the award, which recognises players who showed great sportsmanship or outstanding behaviour at the tournament.
In response to the award, manager Lene Knudtzen said: “I am very proud, I feel like we have won the World Championship already. I think for Danish street football organisation OMBOLD this is the most important prize to get. So it’s fantastic.
“Of course we want to win games, but being here and being part of all this and taking it in and having players who are being seen as being fair players, that is really important to us. I’m not sure any of us would have guessed that we would get this award.”
Meanwhile, proud captain Mike Anderson said: “It’s amazing. It’s crazy. I don’t really understand it. This is what it is all about. The medal is really nice. I will take it home with me and show it to my family. Plus we were on TV—I’ve never been on TV before.”
And as far as Team Denmark’s enjoyment of the tournament so far, manager Lene Knudsten added: “We are enjoying it very much. We have a great team this year, and not only are they a great team on the football pitch but also outside they are really enjoying themselves and taking it all in and meeting all the teams and making new friends. So it’s really nice to be here.”
