CINEMA ON THE STREET

Street cinema in Athens

A three day cinematic event for the homeless of the world

A Kurdish refugee is roaming around the streets of downtown Athens. Winnie, a ten year old Traveler girl lives with her mother and siblings in a ramshackle trailer on the side of the road in a desolate industrialized area of Dublin. A man is released from jail but he has nowhere to return. A boy from Iran gets out of a reformatory school, and yet no one is waiting for him at the gates. A group of Albanian immigrants pursues the Greek dream. An ex-addict from Ireland and a refugee from Afghanistan share the same passion about football. All of them homeless, people living on the fringes of society. Living, dreaming, and constantly, searching for a sense of identity -a sense of belonging. Constantly fighting against apathy and social exclusion.

These people and the issues surrounding them are drawn out of the shadow by fifteen film directors. Their films will be screened at the three-day cinematic festival “Cinema Sto Dromo” (literally meaning “Cinema out on the street”) over the last weekend of May (Friday 29 to Sunday 31/5).

All screenings will take place at the historic Cine Philip in downtown Athens (11 Thasou Street, Amerikis Square).

The official opening is to be held on Friday, May 29 (at 20.30) with the screening of the documentary “Kicking It”. This will be the premiere screening in Greece of the exceptional documentary, directed by Susan Koch and Jeff Werner. Its screening was made possible thanks to Susan Koch, IMG and the Homeless World Cup organizers who exhibited wonderful reflexes, when we made all relevant enquiries.

The screening will be attended, among others, by all members of the current Greek homeless squad, families, friends and supporters.

The event is organized by GALERA Magazine as part of its “Kick off Poverty” campaign 2009.
